Celebrity Environmental News
Written By Katherine Sansom
While the world is still too slow in accepting the clear and present threat of Global Warming, many socially-conscious celebrities are using their high profiles to raise public awareness of environmental problems and to encourage fans to reduce their carbon footprints by making changes in their own lives.
High fashion designers are designing eco-friendly ranges, which supermodels and other A-listers are wearing with pride and determination. The 2005 production, ‘Syriana’, starring George Clooney, was Warner Bros.’s first carbon-neutral movie, and other studios have done the same with movies starring Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Jake Gyllenhaal. Besides drawing a global crowd to support Al Gore’s Live Earth effort, musicians and groups such as Pink Floyd, Coldplay and Feeder have all released carbon-neutral albums, and many more musicians are currently planning carbon-neutral tours and performances.
Cynics may dismiss these actions as opportunistic self-promotion, but it is undeniable that celebrities are in a position to make ‘Green’ cool – and in doing so, they can cut through the apathy that prevents many individuals from taking action.
Some of these high-profile figures have had passions for the natural world and concerns about its destruction far longer than this stance has been popular. Individuals like Daryl Hannah, Robert Redford and Prince Charles have been vocal supporters of environmentalism for decades – in Robert Redford’s case, longer than he has been an actor – but it is only now that their views are given airtime.
