Actress and top model Amber Valletta is one of thirteen celebs spotlighted by the Sundance Channel in a series of short documentaries taking a look at celebrities who bring a very human approach to environmental causes.

Ms. Valletta grew up with a mother very active in anti-nuclear power activism, and she talks about what it was like to grow up in Oklahoma with that sort of an influence. Clearly, it had its effect as the actress – who can be seen in Hitch and Transporter 2 when not on the runways of Paris and Milan –is now very active with the group, Oceana, and its efforts to advertise the dangers of mercury in fish pulled from waters polluted by such things as coal-burning emissions.

There are, or in some negligent countries should be, advisories and bans on eating the fish caught in waters throughout the world. Even isolated ponds and streams aren’t necessarily safe when atmospheric pollution can drop mercury from the skies and endanger children in their development and every creature’s neural functioning. Ms. Valletta’s efforts to increase visibility of this worrisome form of pollution reflect a responsible understanding of her power as a celebrity.

Other stars to offer their ideas and reflections in the Sundance campaign include Josh Lucas, Daryl Hannah, Tim Robbins, and Gabrielle Reese. Catch them on the station of the channels online site!
