Annie Lennox is a singer and songwriter who first came to fame with her band, Eurythmics, in 1988, and since went on to enjoy a fantastically successful solo career. She has since been awarded seven BRIT awards (more than any other woman in the business), four Grammy awards, a Golden Globe and an Oscar for ‘Best Original Song’ for her Lord of the Rings contribution in 2004.
But as well as making a mark for herself in the music industry, Annie Lennox has also used her publicity to highlight the social issues she feels passionately about. Annie joined Bianca Jagger and Vivienne Westwood recently to protest Britain’s renewal of its nuclear weapons program, linking it to the decision to go to war in Iraq; she performed her hit, ‘Sweet Dreams’, at the G8 last year; and is a vocal supporter of Greenpeace and its work to prevent the environmental destruction of the planet.
Annie Lennox (and Dave Stewart) donated all the profits from their 1999 Peacetour to Amnesty International and Greenpeace, and she has just released a song titled ‘Go GREEN!’ to raise money for Greenpeace and highlight its mission. The song also features a number of other high profile celebrities and has been described as “catchy and cool” – so prepare yourselves for another huge Annie Lennox hit!
In April this year, Annie also took part in the two-hour episode of ‘American Idol’, performing the Simon and Garfunkel classic, ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, to raise money for American and African children suffering extreme poverty. The event was held at the Disney Hall of Music and featured a host of other stars who also contributed their efforts.
In honor of her untiring humanitarian efforts, Annie was made patron of the Masters course in ‘Humanitarian and Development Practice’ at Oxford Brookes University in the UK recently, and began by appearing there to introduce a screening of a documentary about a young, HIV-positive woman raising a child on her own.
