Billy Crystal is an actor, writer, comedian, producer and director, born in New York, who has been honored throughout his thirty-year career with three Golden Globes, six Emmy awards, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, and a host of Lifetime Achievement Awards. He presented the Academy Awards on eight separate occasions, and turned down the offer of a ninth in 2006.

He has made twenty-four movies – his most famous being When Harry Met Sally, written two children’s books and a memoir.

Despite being, without question, one of America’s funniest men, Billy also has a serious side, and has professed a love of nature and concern for its destruction – and he has used his public profile to raise awareness of environmental issues.

After making City Slickers in 1991, a movie about a group of city-living men who take a holiday at a cattle ranch, Billy decided to give up eating veal and has stuck to his decision ever since. (This same film is also credited with convincing many other moviegoers to do the same.) Billy has since become a fully-fledged vegetarian and is listed on the Vegetarian Society’s website as one of its supporters.

In 2002, Billy Crystal was amongst a host of celebrities, environmentalists and scientists (representing ‘Americans for Alaska’) who endorsed a letter to the US Senate that protested plans to begin drilling for oil in Alaska. The letter pointed out that Alaska was home to a rich and irreplaceable diversity of wildlife that the drilling would obliterate, and it asked the Senate to rethink those plans.
