Brad Pitt is amongst a variety of celebrities who have purchased eco-friendly, solar-powered homes through the BP Solar Neighbors Program. The program, founded by Edward Norton and his brother, donates a solar installation to a low-income family in South Central Los Angeles whenever a home is purchased directly from the organization. Brad was photographed with the Muhammad family who benefited from the free solar installation in 2005, and has praised the organization’s work.
Last year, Brad judged Global Green USA’s competition to find the best environmentally-friendly architectural designs for new homes in New Orleans, the area devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Brad described his horror at seeing the destruction in the city, but pointed out that the rebuilding would be an excellent opportunity to provide new housing that conserved energy for the benefit of both the environment and the low-income families who lived there.
Brad also hosted a PBS series in 2006, titled ‘Design-e2: The Economies of Being Environmentally Conscious’, which explores issues surrounding sustainability, environmentally friendly architectural design, water culture, organic farming and recycling.
Brad is also one of many celebrities who have swapped their traditional cars for one of the newer hybrid vehicles, and he is now the proud owner of a number of Toyota Prius cars.
