Daryl Hannah has had a passion for nature since she was a child and has spent many years using her public profile to publicize sustainable development and renewable energy issues.
Her own home is entirely solar powered and was purchased through the BP Solar Neighbors Program. This program entitles a South Central Los Angeles low-income family to a free solar installation with every home purchased by a celebrity.
Daryl also drives a 1983 bio-El Camino powered by bio-diesel, and her weekly video blog – ‘DH: Love Life’ – shares information about eco-friendly initiatives and topical environmental stories, as well as tips, advice and informative Quick Time films.
In June of last year, Daryl was one of seventeen protestors who were arrested in an urban community garden in Los Angeles while protesting its clearance to make way for a warehouse development. The actress was amongst others who occupied the fourteen-acres of garden and were forcibly removed by police. Charged with ‘violating a court order and obstructing sheriff's deputies who were enforcing the order’ and sentenced to forty hours of community service, Daryl described the garden as “a model for sustainable urban agriculture”.
Later that year, Daryl was praised for her actions by the Artivist Film Festival.
