Woody Harrelson is a tireless environmental campaigner, involved in a variety of events and actions that range from the high profile – climbing the Golden Gate Bridge in 1997 to protest the destruction of Headwaters Forest, to the intimate – writing a book of his memoirs.
In 2001, Woody and some environmentalist friends decided to take their message to the road in a tour. On bicycle, and followed by a hemp-fueled bus, they cycled from Seattle to Santa Barbara along the coast roads, meeting people and spreading the word. The tour was named ‘The Simple Organic Living Tour’, and the cyclist aimed to show people that the organic lifestyle was simple to achieve and exciting to maintain. The tour was captured on film and released to the public as a documentary titled ‘Go Further’ in 2004.
Woody has also written and released a book titled, ‘How To Go Further’, which documents his experiences and the process of his ‘re-education’. The book is filled with thought-provoking anecdotes and insights, and it expresses Woody’s philosophy that we must change ourselves before we can change the world.
The website that Woody and his wife, Laura Louie, run together is named ‘Voice Yourself’, and has been described by the actor as his “life’s work”. The site promotes pollution protest and features a range of tips, news, information and personal comments, as well as a virtual art gallery, a ‘green kitchen’ section and a short film narrated by Woody. The site is tagged “transforming the world together”, and Woody is certainly not afraid of ambitious action!
In the past, Woody’s work has been honored by organizations such as Rainforest Action Network, PETA, the American Oceans Campaign and the Colorado Hemp Initiative Project; and he was awarded the Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership Award by Global Green USA.
He is also working closely with Living Tree Paper Company to promote the use of recycled paper and post-consumer waste products amongst his Hollywood friends and colleagues. Woody was also one of the stars to arrive at the Academy Awards in 2005 in a hybrid car.
